In my last article "The First Relationship," I briefly explained God’s plan for marriage and how the relationship of Adam and Eve came into being. Now we are going to look at how the devil wove his way into this marriage and changed the way marriage is today.
THE MISCONCEPTION OF PARADISE
In all religions (even in Pentecostal-Apostolic ones), you often hear people say that Adam and Eve lived in a perfect environment; a perfect paradise! However, that statement is not completely true. Yes, Adam and Eve was perfect, pure and in the image of God. Their minds had no knowledge of what sin even was. However, what we fail to realize, is that even though they were perfect, the garden of paradise they lived in was not.
Trolling on the earth and in the Garden of Eden was a fallen angel called Lucifer. This “angel of light” is what scripture refers to as the devil; who seeks whom he may devour (1 Pet 5:8). Therefore the spiritual climate of the Garden was not perfect.
THE ATTACK ON MARRIAGE
As Adam and Eve lived their blissful life not even aware of any devil or even what evil was, they were not aware that they had become a target of the devil. At this time, the couple was the main authority on earth, even above the devil. We need to understand that the devil was secondary to Adam, Eve and all that God had created in the spiritual hierarchy. The devil was not the prince and power of the air yet as we will see in a moment.
The only command that Adam and Eve were given, was to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This is important to understand because it is through knowledge (of good and evil) that people are affected by the devil and sin.
When the devil approached Eve, he did not come to her with a ruff, demonic sounding voice. But, he deceptively came to her as an “angel of light.” What this means is that the presence of the devil around her during this time of temptation felt very similar to God’s presence. His voice was sweet and convincing.
The devils biggest lie of course was that he injected just one word (“not”) into what God said. Then he appealed to her desires. And so, what spiritually happened in Eve’s mind was that the spirit of the devil entered her mind when she believed and accepted what he said. Then, through Eve's urging caused Adam to willingly disobey what God said.
THE FALL OF ADAM AND EVE
After they partook of the forbidden fruit; something in their spirit and minds had changed drastically. They were now aware of good and evil. Satan had successfully entered their lives. But, more importantly than that… they sinned against God and forfeited the authority that God had given them. Now, because they let the devil into their lives, the devil now has become the prince and power (principality) of the air, and has become the god of this world… all because Adam and Eve gave in to the devils temptation.
Because of their disobedience to what God said, Adam and Eve had to face God in shame. God then had to issue punishment on them both. It is through the consequences of their sin that changes the course of life for every single person and every marriage forever. Let’s look at what changed.
DEFEAT – FEAR – SHAME AND BLAME (Gen 3:7-13)
Their fall ushered in all kinds of spirits and attitudes. Adam and Eve now experienced defeat, fear and shame. They even looked at each other in shame because they now see each other as naked and dirty. They ran and hid from God in fear. They each played the blame game for their sin. Nothing ever good happens when we give in to the tactics of the devil. It puts a wedge in relationships, our own wellbeing, and can ruin marriages.
THE CURSE OF THE DEVIL (Gen 3:14-15)
The devil used a serpent (lizard with 4 legs) to tempt Eve. I could say more how this was done, but it isn’t critical for this subject. But, suffice to say, when he was cursed; the serpent had to crawl on its belly. The devil is then told by God that he will suffer defeat through the Messiah (seed of woman).
THE PUNISHMENT ON WOMEN
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. (Gen 3:16)
This scripture and concept will be covered in a later article. But, suffice to say that what took place between Adam and Eve is that they are no longer EQUAL PARTNERS, but now a woman is to be in subjection to her husband; with pain (physically and emotionally) in raising children. This is the root of what we call divine order. The man now becomes the head of the home, while the woman is in subjection under him; then children are in subjection under him and her.
THE PUNISHMENT ON MEN
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. (Gen 3:17-19)
Before, God provided all the food. Adam just simply “dressed it” (picked it – took care of it) and he never had to fend for himself. However, what changed for Adam in the Garden was that he had to go and plow, sow seed and harvest his own food. Man’s curse is that he now has to work for everything… with blood, sweat and tears to provide for his family.
THE WORST OUTCOME FOR MANKIND
Now that sin has entered into the lives of Adam and Eve; and the punishments have been handed out, it is now time for the worst thing that has taken place for not only them, but all of mankind.
They had to be kicked out of the Garden to fend for themselves and to be separated from the presence of the Lord and that sinless state. They now have to live in the world, under the devils authority to live with sins consequences.
That is what sin does; it separates mankind from God’s presence. The consequences of sin is death (Rom 6:23). However, what is important concerning this subject of relationships is that sin also brings separation between families, children and marriages.
The effects of the devil and sin have wreaked havoc on all relationships since their fall. Now we can see why there is so much hate, lust, separations, divorce and death. Nothing good happens in any relationship when sin or misconceptions of what a relationship should be like takes place. All because of sin, spirits and lack of knowledge, relationships have many complex problems. Psychological doctor offices are full of troubled people because of sin and knowledge.
The only cure for real, fulfilled and lasting peace in a relationship is redemption through the blood of Jesus. A person must first start over by being born again. For without God, you cannot truly fix or even understand what needs to happen to have a good relationship… and even in church, there are things that have to be re-learned!
